Here are the numbers, based on the last 20 drafts, for a draft class of 175 rookies:

6 C
23 CB
14 DE
10 DT
3 FB
12 G
14 HB
3 K
20 LB
3 P
7 QB
15 S
12 T
10 TE
23 WR
175

I will email the spreadsheet where I calculated this.

There is no reason to shrink the pool. It only creates problems and solves nothing. Barney is spot on. The number of total available should not drive what position people pick. Shrinking it just pushes people to take other positions just because. Who cares if the pool is 50 K's. The problem is too small, not too large. Let people have choices. The only issue is having too many at the very top. Having a lot of less talented players with varied attributes to let people pick what they like best hurts no one.

There is plenty of room to shrink the pool without causing problems. Though I think dropping to 175 is going from one extreme to another. Shrinking saves Charlie from having to make a bunch of players nobody wants and it saves all of us from having to sift thru hundreds of free agents that were never good enough to make the league.

I presume 98% of the players Charlie doesn't make will be the guys not good enough to be drafted and 100% would be dropped by the next season.

Just to clarify. Anyone we cut when cutting down to 53 gets purged? Plus, anyone in the FA pool that wasn't signed gets purged too?

If both of these are true, why shrink the pool?

Because every draft, ~150 players that aren't good enough to make any team in the league, and never will be good enough to make any team in the league, end up sitting in the free agent pool for 5 seasons.

There is no harm in players sitting in the pool in my opinion. Shrinking the players to draft only forces teams to draft positions they may not have otherwise as long as Charlie continues to trend the draft down at the top. The bottom creates no issues. This seems to be a solution for no problem from my own point of view.
