Defensive Play Fixes

Let's use this post for tracking the submission of plays fixed, and keep the discussion on the other post.

So far I have fixed my plays (which are AT, ATF, AF, KC, KCC, some of the PS, TT, WA) in the following categories

34 Run Right
43 Run Right
34 Run Middle
43 Run Middle

I will be doing Run Left next, to be followed by the passing categories. I think all my RRD, GLR, GLP are all currently legal already.

Please post here any other plays fixed and submitted to Charlie so we know what is already fixed as we work toward fixing 100 percent of the plays not complying with current rules.

DN23PD09 - resaved version of original DN23PM09 play but Charlie may not accept because there is no category that allows just 2 defenders to defend the LOS

The DN's were on purpose grandfathered an should not need to be edited.

That DN only has two players defending the LOS. There are NO categories that currently allow this. To make it legal, maybe an amendment to the rules should be made? Specifically to the 2DL rules?

How about this:

Only 2DL plays are allowed to have 2 players defending the LOS.

Benefit of this change: makes sure plays like this are legal with no need to be grandfathered + allows for the creation of similar 2DL plays (which we are currently barred from doing)

The DN2 plays were specifically grandfathered in at the time of the change by the Commish as the league was split pretty even at the time. Charlie made the call to change the rule moving forward and leave the existing ones in the play pool. It is his call to make which I would support fully either way.

I have discussed 2DL plays multiple times with the Commish. I believe they should be fully allowed allowed in RL and all pass defenses as long as they meet the other criteria of the category. I also agree the NFL always has at least 3 players defending the LOS other than prevent which we should mirror. They also use it as a nickel formation regularly which is why I believe the % use could be increased to 50%.

I support this but to be specific.

If we allow 2DL in RL, then that is when 3 players must still defend the LOS. On the other hand, only 2 players are needed to defend the LOS in all passing categories (except GLP).

I would take it further and only allow two players to defend the LOS in PRD, no more no less.

But baby steps. Charlie seems in favor of allowing only 2 players to be needed to defend the LOS in all passing categories (except GLP).

My point in this thread is not to make any rule changes. Just the commish decides to change the play rules and it isn't the commish directing the change to the plays. I only discussed 2 DL just to note I'm not against the current rules, but changing approved grandfathered plays without the commish saying to.

Discussing 2 DL separately from the illegal play issue. They are used regularly in the NFL in Nickel formations, but not using 9 players to defend the pass other than prevent D. It is really just a LB playing DE, but still defending the LOS. All just to get more speed on D and the flexibility to confuse the offense as to which players are dropping into coverage. I'd be against just 2 players defending the LOS. The current rules are actually fine other than RL is a more pass oriented call. I'd be happy to keep everything the same but allowing 50% where it is 33% now.

I think we should either change the rule to allow only 2 men defending the LOS on 2- DL plays, or if we do not do that, keep the requirement of 3 defending the LOS and it applies to ALL plays. Otherwise the rule is negated by every team using maxx number of plays as allowed that do not have 2 men defending the LOS. No more "grandfathering" of anything. The more we do that the more we do not effectively have the rules.
